Flare Pilots and Retractable Systems
The flare pilot ignition system is one of the most critical components on any flare system to ensure that waste gas is ignited under any conditions. HERO offers a number of flare pilot technologies to meet your specific application. With over 2,000 pilots in service, our most common ignition system is our High Energy Spark (HES) pilot that is designed to operate on Natural Gas or Propane. This system can be supplied to operate on either AC or battery with a solar panel charging system. In addition, the HES pilot can be installed on a HERO Flare system or an existing flare system.
If a continuous pilot gas supply is not available, there are several alternative pilot ignition systems available. Use our "Pilot Selection Guide" below to determine the best pilot ignition technology for your application.
Pilot Selection Guide
Our High Energy Spark (HES) pilots is the most common Pilot Ignition System supplied by HERO when continuous pilot gas is available. This is the most economical and reliable pilot.

Complete System – Each HES pilot system includes the pilot and control panel. The pilot assembly includes the High Energy Sparker and thermocouple for pilot flame monitoring. The control panel contains the spark controller and temperature switch in a NEMA 4X box.
Pilot Stays Lit - This pilot won’t go out! The internal sparker is always active. Every 3-4 seconds, the pilot spark activates even if the pilot is lit.
No Compressed Air Required – Unlike traditional flame front generators, HERO pilots do not require any compressed air.
Electricity is Optional – The standard HES ignition system uses solar power with a five-day battery backup. 120V systems are available at the same price.
Multiple Fuels – The HERO flare pilot can operate on any clean, dry fuel gas. Natural gas, wellhead gas or propane are common pilot fuels. N.G. consumption is 78 scfh at 5 psig.
Meets EPA Regulations – 40CFR60.18 has specific requirements for pilot ignition systems. HERO pilots meet the EPA regulations for flame stability and pilot monitoring.
Easy to Install – HERO pilots can be mounted on any flare tip. We include mounting brackets and prewire the electrical devices to a common junction box. We can even supply the interconnecting wire, conduit and fuel gas tubing.

Pilot Retraction Systems
Tired of retraction systems that hang up? Looking for an upgrade to the common Unistrut system that rusts and corrodes? The Hero Retraction system is better in almost every way. Heavy duty bearings and machined subcomponents ensure trouble-free operation. Stainless steel guide cables guarantee smooth travel from the base to the flare tip.
The HERO retractable system allows pilots to be raised and lowered at grade level by cranking a manual winch. This alleviates the need for any man baskets to access the pilots. Periodic maintenance and inspections can be carried out while the flare is in service.
Our pilot retraction system works!
The HERO retraction pilot system can be retrofitted on an existing flare stack with minimal field work required. Our system is designed to bolt onto the flare stack to alleviate any welding at high elevations.
